69th NSG Fencing for U-19 boys and girls P Ambika settles for silver in girls’ sabre competition

IMPHAL, Jan 30 : Manipur’s Pangambam Ambika settled for a silver medal on Day 2 of the 69th National School Games Fencing for U-19 Boys and Girls being underway in Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
Ambika went down 8-15 to Prakriti Sharma of IPSE in the U-19 girls’ sabre final to earn the silver medal for hosts Manipur.
Ambika defeated Samridhi of Maharashtra 15-11 earlier in the quarterfinals before outlasting Subhanya of Jammu and Kashmir 15-10 in the semi-finals to set up the final date with Prakriti.
Prakiti meanwhile got a first round bye before defeating Manipur’s Pebam Baby Diana 15-9 in the semi-finals.
Baby Diana and Subhanya shared the bronze medal podium in this category.
The day also saw Sachin of Haryana securing the U-19 boys’ individual foil event gold medal. Sachin defeated compatriot Yashraj 15-13 in a keenly contested final to earn the gold medal.
Manipur’s Tamnganba settled for a bronze medal in this event as he suffered a semi-final defeat to Sachin.
Earlier, Tamnganba got the better of Chandigarh’s Lalitchandra 15-13 to seal his place in the semis.
Sachin meanwhile defeated Punjab’s Dhairya 15-7 to enter the semis.
Sharing the bronze medal podium with Tamnganba was Siddharth of Maharashtra who defeated Sunil Kumar of Gujarat 15-13 in the quarterfinals before going down 9-15 to Yashraj in the semis.
Yashraj had earlier defeated Kamal of Chandigarh 15-10 to advance to the semis.
The day also saw Haryana’s Sanju beat compatriot Palak for the girls’ epee title.
With three more medals registered today, Manipur medal tally swelled to 5 medals- 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. Earlier yesterday, Laikhuram Bomcha and Nepram Koubru won the gold and silver medal respectively in the boy’s individual sabre event.
The competition will run till February 3.
