Rein in Kuki-Zo groups : WMC
By Our Staff Reporter
IMPHAL, Jan 30 : World Meetei Council (WMC) has stated unequivocally that unless the armed Kuki-Zo groups are restrained and brought firmly under control, peace in Manipur will remain elusive.
In a press release, WMC reiterated that the Manipur crisis is being perpetuated by the Government of India’s policy of appeasement towards armed Kuki-Zo groups.
Asserting that the Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups continue to be the primary drivers of instability and violence, WMC maintained that normalcy cannot return in the State as long as this reality is ignored by the Modi Government.
"The moment this fundamental truth is acknowledged and acted upon, WMC firmly believes that peace can be restored in Manipur in no time", it added.
In this context, WMC said the Manipur Government’s January 29 press release regarding resettlement of IDPs is "largely meaningless", as it demonstrates a lack of understanding of the ground realities. It said the State Government appears to be either ignorant of or unwilling to acknowledge the root causes of the ongoing crisis.
WMC has urged the State Government to consider the opinions of civil society organisations and expressed hope that the present Central rule in Manipur will introspect, realign its approach with ground realities, and act in the genuine interest of restoring peace, security, and dignity for all communities in the State.
