IMPHAL, Jan 4 : Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Manipur in-charge of the All India Cong- ress Committee (AICC), has called for fresh Assembly elections in the State as he asserted that extending President's Rule (PR) would go against the interests of the people.
The AICC leader arrived in Imphal around 2.30 pm today, where he was felicitated by Congress leaders, including MPCC president K Meghachandra.
Speaking to the media at Imphal Airport, Saptagiri stated that the Congress party won't support the extension of President's Rule.
It would also be wrong to prolong direct Central rule in the State, he said and added that Manipur will begin to heal once the State Assembly is dissolved and a fresh mandate of the people is taken.
He reiterated that the State Assembly must be dissolved immediately, and steps should be taken to establish a democratic Government.
Meanwhile, the Congress leader stated that a Nationwide protest will be launched against the VB-G RAM G Act which has replaced the MGNREGA.
He also said that a press interaction will be held in Imphal regarding the matter.
The Congress party is also prepared to launch a series of movements in protest against the replacement of MGNREGA with VB-G RAM G Act, he said and called for the people’s support in their efforts.
Saptagiri said that BJP and RSS are against Mahatma Gandhi and his ideology and they have been always undermining the legacy of the Father of the Nation.
He cited the renaming of MGNREGA to the VB-G RAM G Act as an example.
The "RAM" mentioned in the VB-G RAM G Act does not refer to Lord Ram, but rather to Nathuram, the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, he claimed.
Stating that the Congress will stage various forms of protest until the Centre withdraws the VB-G RAM G Act, he said that the Congress party will not remain silent to the abolishment of MGNREGA, which provided wage employment to rural people.
The Congress leader said that he will meet different party leaders during his stay in the State to discuss the party's organizational strategy for the 2027 State Assembly elections and other issues. Saying that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee of Assam, of which he is also a member, he expressed confidence that the Congress party will secure a landslide victory in the Assam Assembly elections.
