Accused hubby, mom in-law sent to jail

IMPHAL, Jan 5: The accused husband and mother-in-law of late Khaidem (ongbi) Chaoba (27) have been remanded to judicial custody in connection with the suspicious death of Chaoba.
The husband identified as Khaidem Nareshor (29) s/o Ingocha and mother-in-law Khaidem (ongbi) Indira 47 W/o Ingocha of Wangoi Mamang Khaidem Leikai were produced before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West I today after completion of the police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand by a team of Wangoi police station.
An APP of the State submitted that on December 27 morning, a missing report was filed by Khaidem Nareshor stating that his wife Khaidem (ongbi) Chaoba went out from his house on December 26 at around 8 pm and did not come back.
One unknown female dead body was discovered at Thiyam Leishangkhong near Ibudhou Pakhangba temple  on December 27.
During preliminary interrogation, the mother-in-law disclosed that an unknown number rang up on her mobile phone and requested to speak with her daughter-in-law (deceased) in the evening of December 26 and she handed over the phone to her daughter-in-law (deceased).
After talking over the phone, Chaoba went out hurriedly and did not come back.
On the basis of Indira’s statement, the unknown mobile number was traced and third accused Moirangthem Dhanajit (29) s/o Jugindro of Nongpok Keithelmanbi Awang Leikai was arrested.
Dhanajit disclosed that he was involved in the killing of Chaoba. He also disclosed another accused identified as Shamurailatpam Kananbala (41) d/o (L) Bihari of Yairipok Bishnunaha Mayai Leikai.
During interrogation, Khaidem Nareshor admitted that he tortured his wife when she was alive.
He also disclosed that he had an extra marital affair with Shamurailatpam Kananbala since December 2023 and his wife had learnt about their affair.
Shamurailatpam Kananbala too admitted that she had a love affair with Khaidem Nareshor as well as with Moirangthem Dhanajit.
She further disclosed that she had an emotional attachment with Khaidem Nareshor and she got the phone number of Indira from Nareshor.
She also disclosed that she had physical relationship with Nareshor many times and had intention to live with Nareshor as husband and wife.
However Khaidem (ongbi) Chaoba often insulted and  threatened her.
Kananbala said that she also suffered physical torture and punishment at the hands of some groups/individuals following complaints made by Chaoba.
She further submitted that she and co-accused Moirangthem Dhanajit killed Chaoba by strangulation on the night of December 26, 2025.
Moirangthem Dhanajit admitted that he had a love affair with Kananbala since 2024, and Kananbala made the plan to kill Chaoba.
Dhanajit disclosed that he and Kananbala went on an Activa moped hired from a friend to execute Kananbala’s plan. He disclosed that he contacted Indira over phone and called out Chaoba from her house and later killed her.
After taking Dhanajit into police custody, his mobile phone, concealed at a bushy place of Nongpok Keithelmanbi Awang Leikai,  and the Honda Activa used in committing the murder were recovered, the APP told the Court.
The Court, after hearing the APP’s  submission and on perusal of the case record, remanded both the accused husband and the mother-in-law in judicial custody for smooth investigation of the case.
Notably, prime accused Moirangthem Dhanajit and Shamurailatpam Kananbala are presently lodged in police custody till January 8 in connection with the case.
