IMPHAL, Jan 5: Over 30 kilograms of single-use plastics, seized in different operations have been handed over to a trader for recycling in Meghalaya today.
The single-use plastics which included carry bags and disposable glasses were handed over by the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and related authorities to Ashok Trader.
Ashok Trader is expected to dispatch the single-use plastics to Meghalaya for recycling at Kakarania Innovative Systems Private Limited.
Ashok Trader is based in Tentha Marongband, Thoubal district. Its proprietor, Naorem Ashokkumar received the seized plastics.
Holes were made on the single-use plastics items to render them useless before handing over for recycling.
Notably, the single used plastics were seized on November 23 and December 24, 2025 by the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and the State Police. On November 23, 2025, the police along with officials of the IMC and MPCB seized 30 Kg of single-use plastics in 428 bags being brought from Guwahati to Imphal in a truck. Some 11 bags of single-use plastics were seized from a bus in North AOC on December 24, 2025.
IMC's Deputy Sanitary Officer, Lisam Rupendra said the banned single-use plastics were being sent to Meghalaya for recycling after completing legal procedures.
Recycling is done at firms which have Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) registration. Therefore, the SUPs are being taken to the firm in Meghalaya, he said.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) registration is a mandatory process for producers, importers, and brand owners to manage their product waste like plastic, e-waste and batteries.
The IMC along with relevant departments will continue to launch drives against banned single-use plastics, he added.
