IMPHAL, Feb 1: A three-day exhibition of photo- graphs collected by late Prof John Paratt and his wife late Saroj Nalini Arambam Paratt was opened today at Advan-ced Research Consortium (ARC), Bheigyabati Leikai (Lane No 19).
The opening function of the exhibition organised by Advanced Research Consortium Library and Archives (ARCLA), Manipur was graced by retired IAS Dr RK Nimai and Wayel Kati Editor Hemantakumar Ningom- bam as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the opening function, ARCLA director Wangjam Somorjit said that a large number of photographs collected and used by late Prof John Paratt and his wife late Saroj Nalini Arambam Paratt in their field and research works were donated to ARCLA.
Out of all the photographs donated by late Prof John Paratt when he was alive, only 98 are being displayed at the exhibition, Somorjit said.
He said that many of the photographs put on display are of Lai Haraoba rituals performed in 1950’s and 1960’s. Other photographs are images of different religious rituals performed by the Meitei community, he added.
Dr RK Nimai said that any research work on the history of Manipur must encompass the history of South East Asia.
From looking at antique photographs, one can understand past traditions, dressing style, ornaments and other articles used in the past, he said. ARCLA’s website www.arclibrary.org was also launched at the function.
