IMPHAL, Feb 11 : In view of the recent incidents of violence at Litan Sareikhong village, Letzamang Haokip, MLA of 57-Henglep (ST) AC and the Kuki Christian Church (KCC) have appealed to everyone concerned to exercise utmost restraint and shun violence.
In a statement, the MLA appealed to the Central and State machinery to act swiftly, fairly and impartially to contain the situation, restore normalcy and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected villagers.
He further urged all sections of society to act with a strong sense of responsibility to protect lives, property and the fragile social fabric of Manipur.
Expressing deep concern over the episode which reportedly began with a scuffle between local individuals, he said it should ‘not be viewed or given a communal interpretation’.
“Let us choose dialogue over discord, compassion over confrontation and work together in the larger interest of peace to prevent any further escalation”, he added.
Meanwhile, the KCC has strongly condemned the recent incidents of house burning involving Tangkhul and Kuki families at Litan Sareikhong village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
In a statement issued from its headquarters in Kangpokpi, Dr T Lunkim, administrative secretary, KCC, described the incidents as ‘deeply unfortunate and condemnable’, stating that acts of arson and violence have no place in the non-violence teachings of Jesus Christ, or in a civilized society.
Expressing anguish over the destruction of homes, he stated that such incidents not only damage property but also undermine communal harmony and peaceful coexistence among neighbouring communities.
Emphasizing the necessity for peace, he made an appeal to both communities ‘to maintain utmost restraint and not be provoked into retaliatory actions’.
KCC has also called upon Church leaders, civil society organisations and community elders to work collectively towards immediate dialogue and reconciliation to defuse tensions.
Further, it urged the concerned Government authorities and law enforcement agencies to take necessary measures to enforce law and order in vulnerable areas and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
