IMPHAL, Feb 12: Lok Sabha Member Dr Bimol Akoijam has asserted that unidentified armed persons roaming openly must be checked immediately in order to contain the communal violence which has besieged Litan, Ukhrul district.
Speaking to media persons at his Keishamthong residence here this afternoon, Dr Bimol said that images and video clips of unidentified armed persons moving around openly are being circulated widely on social media.
This is further adding fuel to the violence, he said.
The Lok Sabha Member urged the Government to check free movement of armed persons other than army, police and CAPF, and show that there is rule of law in the State.
He said that the violence can be controlled when the strength, authority and legitimacy of Manipur Police are enhanced.
Strengthening State Police is imperative for law and order is a State subject, Dr Bimol said.
If the Government of India is de facto ruling the State, strengthening State Police will be impossible, because it seems the Government of India is indifferent to the protracted violent crisis which erupted on May 3, 2023, he said.
He added that the Government of India is the one which is running the show.
To a query, Dr Bimol Akoijam said that each and every community may have their wishes and aspirations but this does not mean all their demands must be fulfilled.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s visit to Jiribam and his interaction with both the Meitei and Hmar communities was a positive step. However, no such step was taken during the initial days of the crisis, he added.
