IMPHAL, Feb 12 : Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Union Government has acceded to the demand for opening of UPSC (Mains) Examination Centre at Imphal from this year (2026) onward.
In a post on Facebook, MP Sanajaoba said that he had raised the issue on the floor of the House as a Special Mention-"Demand to Open UPSC/similar Exam Centre in Manipur (Imphal)"-on March 22, 2021.
He also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10, 2022 requesting him to consider the difficulties faced by the poor students of Manipur who have to travel to other cities for the examinations.
The letter also emphasized the plight of Manipuri candidates who have opted for Manipuri language and literature as their optional paper but have to write answers in Bengali script, which they are not acquainted with, said the RS MP on Facebook. He expressed his gratitude to both the Central Government and the Prime Minister for considering the problems he has raised on the floor of the Rajya Sabha on various issues concerning Manipur.
The MP recalled that on February 2, 2023, he had asked for allowing writing answers in Manipuri optional paper for the Civil Services/UPSC examinations both in Bengali and Meetei Mayek in the Rajya Sabha as a Special Mention. This was approved by the Union Government.
During the ensuing Parliamentary Budget session, he brought forth the demand for inclusion of Meetei Mayek script alongside Bengali script for the Manipuri optional question paper in UPSC examinations on February 9, 2026 during the Zero Hour.
