IMPHAL, Feb 12 : Residents of Wakha Khun have warned that no forest officials will be allowed to enter the locality or the adjoining hill areas if no concrete actions are taken to facilitate water supply to them within a week.
Wakha Khun falls under Kshetrigao AC in Imphal East.
Today, locals of Wakha staged a sit-in protest against the alleged delay in the augmentation of the water treatment plant at Wakha Leimaching.
The protesters carried placards with slogans such as "Water is Life," "Don't Restrict Construction of Leimaching Water Supply Plant," "Let's Live Together," "Provide Water to Wakha Residents," "Don't Violate Our Rights," and "No Delay in Forest Clearance," among others.
Speaking to the media, Mayanglambam Bhisma, a local, stated that Wakha Khun is listed on the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) website, with 229 households as beneficiaries.
The website mentions that 69 households have tap water connections, he said, but in reality, no families in the locality receive tap water under JJM.
He recalled that PHED officials had assured them that a reservoir would be constructed at the water treatment plant at Leimaching by March 2026.
Claiming that the construction of the water treatment plant at the site of the previous water supply scheme at Leimaching has been halted by Forest officials, who cite the area as part of a reserved forest, he stated that the site for the new plant is only about 50 feet in diameter.
He also claimed that Forest officials had filled the reservoir with earth.
Stating that they have been relying on private tankers for water all this time, he urged the PHED and the Forest Department to resolve the issue and ensure the residents of Wakha have access to clean water.
