IMPHAL, Feb 12 : The Heingang Kendra Sporting Union (HKSU) has urged IGAR (South) to preserve the historic Koirengei airfield, while expressing concern over the construction of new structures at the site.
In a press note issued by its secretary Ng Satrajit, HKSU stated that the airfield, which has been occupied by the Territorial Army and other defence forces for over 15 years, is a priceless World War II heritage site.
Saying that the construction of new structures at the airfield has triggered anxiety among the people, the Union added that over 3,00 acres of land had been donated to the Assam Rifles, and another 100 acres to the BSF, in close proximity to the airfield.
HKSU further stated that the continued occupation of the airfield is concerning.
Stating that former Chief Minister N Biren Singh had written multiple times to successive Defence Ministers to preserve the airfield, the Union added that the Government of Manipur is also prepared to allocate sufficient land near Leimakhong to facilitate the relocation of defence personnel stationed at the airfield.
The Union urged IGAR (South) to advise the authorities concerned to halt the ongoing construction at the airfield.
