UKHRUL, Feb 13 : Amid circulating narratives on social media regarding the February 7 incident in Litan, the victim has issued a clarification, stating that several claims being shared online are inconsistent with what he describes as the actual sequence of events.
Stalin Shimray, a resident of Litan and a teacher by profession, expressed deep anguish over the growing tensions in the area and the destruction of homes belonging to members of both the Tangkhul and Kuki communities.
Shimray states, “having been raised in Litan since my childhood, I share deep-seated communal ties with both the Tangkhul and Kuki communities. It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I witness the destruction of homes belonging to my friends and relatives.”
According to Shimray, he was hospitalised at the time a video of the incident began circulating and had no knowledge of who recorded or shared it. He added that the online narration of events had “gone beyond tolerance,” prompting him to present his account of what transpired.
Shimray stated that he had conducted his regular evening tuition classes on February 7. Afterward, he visited a friend, Kasar, and was preparing to return home when the incident occurred. Due to ongoing road construction in the area, the road level was approximately five feet below the house, and the area was poorly lit.
He adds that another acquaintance, Jajo, was standing across the road with a torchlight. As Shimray and Kasar attempted to climb down in the dark, they requested Jajo to direct the flashlight toward them to help navigate the uneven surface.
At that point, according to Shimray’s account, three individuals who were present nearby objected to the flashlight being pointed in their direction. He said Kasar clarified that the light was only being used to assist friends amid the ongoing road construction. However, the situation allegedly escalated when additional individuals arrived after being contacted by phone, and Kasar was reportedly assaulted.
Shimray stated that he intervened with the intention of stopping the altercation and calming the situation but was subsequently attacked by the Kuki youths called in by the individuals and sustained serious injuries.
He maintained that he did not engage in any form of provocation and reiterated his appeal for truth and restraint in public discourse.
Shimray is widely known in Litan as an educator and community figure. A first-class graduate in Mathematics from Delhi University, he has been involved in guiding students and contributing to academic development in the area.
As tensions remain high, community members have called for restraint and an impartial inquiry into the matter to establish the facts and prevent further escalation. Ukhrul Times
