Shots fired, spark panic

IMPHAL, Feb 14: Fresh gun shots caused panic and com-motion among the people in the Litan area today.
Suspected Tangkhul volunteers fired 12 rounds of shots from a 12-bore wea-pon near the foothills between Sikibung and Litan Sareikhong at around 10.55 am.
The location from which the suspected blank rounds originated has been verified by a joint team comprising district police, CAPF personnel and Tangkhul civilians.
On the other hand, BSF troops have been deployed on the Mongkot Chepu side, covering the Thoubal River bank while CRPF personnel have been deployed on the Litan Sareikhong side, also covering the river bank as a confidence building measure since Friday.
Meanwhile, Manipur Police have requested both the communities in and around Litan to refrain from spreading unverified rumours to prevent any further escalation.
Police have warned that legal action will be initiated against anyone found spreading fake or misleading information to escalate the situation.
