IMPHAL, Feb 16: The Manipuri Welfare Society of Arunachal Pradesh has raised a proposal for introducing direct flights between Itanagar and Imphal.
The society submitted a memorandum to the Chief Ministers of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh on February 15, 2026 seeking joint intervention of the two Chief Ministers toward introduction of direct flight services between Itanagar and Imphal.
The memorandum said that introduction of direct flight service between Itanagar and Imphal has become an urgent necessity in view of the increasing movement of students, professionals, Government employees and families between Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
At present, a considerable number of students from Arunachal Pradesh are pursuing higher education at institutions such as Central Agricultural University (CAU),  Manipur University, Manipur Institute of Technology and various other colleges and private universities in Imphal and Churachandpur.
Similarly, many students from Manipur are studying in Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), College of Horticulture and Forestry, Pashighat and College of Agriculture, Pashighat, it said.
The memorandum said that the absence of a direct and reliable mode of transportation poses significant challenges in terms of time, cost and safety.
Surface travel between the two States is long, physically demanding and often uncertain due to terrain and weather conditions. Further, in light of the ongoing communal crisis in Manipur, the need for secure and efficient air connectivity has become even more pressing, it added.
