IMPHAL, Feb 16 : The World Meetei Council (WMC) has appealed Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to submit the latest socio-economic and ethnographic report of the Meetei community, along with the State’s recommendation for consideration of the inclusion of Meeteis in the Scheduled Tribes list under the Constitution of India, to the Centre.
In a letter, WMC pointed out that the issue of inclusion of the Meetei community in the ST list is fundamentally a matter of identity, protection, and long-term survival, which should not be equated with or made contingent upon the present crisis in Manipur.
The question of the community’s survival cannot be treated as a subject of negotiation or compromise in the process of addressing the current situation or in the name of restoring peace and normalcy, it added.
As such, WMC urged the Chief Minister's Office to facilitate the submission of the above-mentioned reports as sought by the Centre.
