IMPHAL, Feb 18: Reacting to the incident at an examination centre at Wabagai in which answer scripts were torn and burnt, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has called on authorities concerned to award exemplary punishment of all students involved.
Speaking to reporters at DESAM's office at Kei-shampat this afternoon, its secretary general, Thoudam Sanjoy said the student body takes yesterday's incident very seriously, and it wants the Education Department to conduct an enquiry.
The Education Department must form an enquiry committee to probe the incident and identify the students who are responsible for the incident.
A strong deterrent measure must be taken, and those who are found guilty must be punished strictly, he said.
The incident occurred at the Wabagai Higher Secondary School, one of the centres of Higher Secondary (Class XII) Examination, conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM).
Over 200 students appeared in the English paper examination at the centre.
A number of students at the centre turned into a violent mob after their request for extra time was denied. The students vandalised school property and tore answer scripts.
Sanjoy said such unwanted incidents have also happened in the past.
The incident at the Wabagai Higher Secondary School was a deed of some students who were angered by the strict conduct of examination at the centre. Their act of tearing answer scripts has affected all the other students of the examination centre, Sanjoy said.
"DESAM is strongly against such incidents, and we want the Education Department to set an example by strictly punishing the violent students," Sanjoy said.
Letting them get away without a punishment would embolden them and encourage students in other centres to resort to such actions, Sanjoy added.
In another disturbing incident, Sanjoy said DESAM received alleged reports of unidentified persons entering examination centres in Kakching district and distributing papers containing answers during the examination yesterday.
During inspections conducted at some examination centres, Sanjoy added, DESAM members and volunteers found students bringing micro notes.
He advised students against using unfair means in the examinations, and urged the related authorities to take appropriate actions to conduct the examination free and fair.
