IMPHAL, Feb 18 : The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has urged the State Government to take a Cabinet decision to defer the census and forward the resolution to the Centre.
Addressing a programme at Wangkhei Keithel Asangbi Community Hall today, CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba further urged all elected representatives of Manipur to clarify their stance on the upcoming census before the end of this month.
He said that they are prepared to launch a massive movement if the Government proceeds with the population count without implementing a mechanism to identify illegal immigrants.
Claiming that the ongoing crisis in Manipur is fuelled by illegal immigrants, he said that the census will not yield accurate figures if illegal immigrants who entered Manipur after 1951 are included in the population count.
There will be no objection if the Government first identifies illegal immigrants and then proceed with the census, Jeetendra stated.
Saying that the census operation should be postponed at least for Manipur, given the extraordinary circumstances the State has been facing, Jeetendra urged the State Government to take a Cabinet decision to defer the census and forward the resolution to the Centre.
The people of Manipur didn't oppose previous census operations, he said and urged the Government to implement NRC or a similar mechanism to identify illegal immigrants.
Saying that abnormal population growth was recorded in some districts in the previous census report, he added that a similar error would occur again if no concrete steps are taken to identify illegal immigrants.
CJFD finance secretary Sunil Karam emphasised that the State Government must inform the Centre about the current circumstances in Manipur, which he described as unsuitable for conducting the census operation.
He asked how the Government plans to carry out the census operation when even free movement is not permitted in the State.
Showing excessive generosity to illegal immigrants will lead to the marginalisation of indigenous people, threatening their cultural and demographic integrity, he warned.
