Imphal, Feb 18: A truckload of timber reportedly smuggled from Manipur into Assam via National Highway 37, linking the two states, was impounded, and two alleged smugglers were apprehended during a drive carried out by security forces, officials reported on Wednesday.
Acting on specific information, Manipur police, with assistance from CRPF personnel and forest officials, launched an operation at Leingangpokpi village along NH-37, leading to arrests and seizures, the reports stated.
Two alleged smugglers, later identified as Prem Chand (53) and Narayan Lal Bajya (42), both from Rajasthan, were arrested along with the seized items and vehicle. They were accused of smuggling the timber after failing to produce proper documentation when law enforcers demanded it during the operation.
A total of 120 illegal timber logs were found concealed beneath the iron scrap in the Tata truck, the reports further stated.
The arrested smugglers and the timber-laden truck have been handed over to the concerned Forest Department officials for further legal proceedings under relevant forest and environmental protection laws. NE NOW
