Distinguished scientist joins NIT

IMPHAL, Feb 19: Dr Prahlada Rao BB, pre-distinguished scientist and former Joint Director of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bengaluru has joined NIT Manipur and will serve at the institute for a period of five years.
Dr Prahlada Rao BB was selected as an ANRF Prime Minister Professor on February 12, 2026.
The Prime Minister Professorship is a National initiative aimed at strengthening India’s research ecosystem by positioning eminent scientists in institutions requiring sustained research leadership, said a press release issued by the NIT Manipur Registrar.
Under this program, the Professor receives a fellowship of Rs 2,50,000 per month, a research grant of Rs 24,00,000 per annum, and an institutional overhead of Rs 1,00,000 per annum for five years.
At NIT Manipur, Dr Rao will mentor faculty members and research scholars in High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Quantum AI & Machine Learning, and advanced research proposal development.
Dr Rao brings over 28 years of experience in IT industry R&D with contributions in HPC, Grid Computing, Scientific Cloud Computing, Evolutionary Computing, and VLSI Design Automation, it said.
He has contributed to major National missions including the Indian Light Combat Aircraft Definition Phase and C-DAC’s Parallel Computing and National Grid (GARUDA) initiatives.
During his career, he has served in key roles at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), IBM, Mentor Graphics, and STMicroelectronics.
With over 10 years in academia, he has taught HPC, Computer Organization & Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, and Microprocessors to BTech and MTech students.
Dr Rao has authored more than 70 research papers, holds two granted patents, filed two patents, contributed seven book chapters, and delivered over 51 invited talks at National and international conferences, it added.
