IMPHAL, Feb 20 : Condemning the brutal attack on senior journalist Khoiram Loyalakpa, journalists in Manipur staged a sit-in protest today at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai.
Loyalakpa is the Editor of Naharolgi Thoudang.
During the demonstration, protesters held placards bearing slogans such as "We condemn assault on a journalist" and "Don't intimidate journalists," demanding justice for the victim.
The protest was jointly organised by All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild of Manipur (EGM).
Meanwhile, AMWJU and EGM submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Y Khemchand, demanding the arrest of those responsible for assaulting Loyalakpa.
The memorandum demanded immediate and time-bound registration of an FIR against the perpetrators, along with swift and transparent investigation to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all those responsible for the attack.
AMWJU and EGM also called for enhanced protection measures and safety protocols for journalists working across the State.
These include threat assessments, preventive mechanisms, and regular engagement with journalists' associations to address ongoing safety concerns and implement appropriate safeguards.
Emphasising the vital role of a free press in strengthening democratic governance, AMWJU and EGM warned that the repeated targeting of journalists undermines public confidence, creating an environment of fear and self- censorship.
The organisations urged the Chief Minister to ensure justice for Loyalakpa and to protect the fundamental rights to life, liberty, and freedom of the press for all media professionals in Manipur.
