IMPHAL, Feb 20 : Thanlon AC MLA Vungzagin Valte who was severely assaulted by a mob in 2023 and has seen been surviving under strict medical care passed away today.
He was 61.
A resident of Bungmual (A) in Churachandpur district and a former Minister, Valte breathed his last at Medanta Medicity Hospital at Gurugram, Delhi, around 5.25 pm.
Chief Minister Y Khemchand had arranged an air ambulance to evacuate the MLA to Delhi as his condition deteriorated and he was airlifted from Imphal Airport on February 8. The Chief Minister himself personally saw him off.
The Chief Minister had also met with Valte's family.
During a brief yet emotional interaction at the airport, the Chief Minister told the MLA that he will wait for his return, before seeing him off.
Valte was first elected to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2012 on an INC ticket. He was re-elected to the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly on a BJP ticket in 2017, serving as Minister for TA & Hills, GAD, and Transport, and was again elected in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2022.
Tragedy struck his family after the eruption of violence in Manipur. On May 4, 2023, Valte was attacked by a mob on RIMS Road in Imphal while returning to Lamphel after a meeting with former Chief Minister N Biren.
He sustained critical injuries in the assault and had been receiving medical treatment since then.
