Jail warden remanded

IMPHAL, Feb 20: A Warden of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa has been remanded in police custody for allegedly facilitating unauthorised use of mobile phones by some inmates of the jail.
Warden Sahid Shah (35) of Kairang Mayai Leikai was produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East yesterday along with a prayer for police remand by a team of Heingang police station for smooth investigation of the case.
An APP of the State submitted that the accused was arrested on February 18 on the charge of illegally facilitating unauthorized use of mobile phones by inmates, including those imprisoned under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
Multiple mobile phones and sim cards were also seized from Sahid Shah’s possession and he has admitted the charges levelled against him, the APP said.
During the investigation, it was established that financial transactions were done from within the jail premises by inmates through the UPI account of the alleged accused, the APP said.
The APP prayed the Court to remand the Warden in police custody for seven days in order to ascertain the full extent of his involvement and identify other connections.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP and on perusal of the case record, remanded the accused in police custody till February 25.
