IMPHAL, Feb 4 : The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged all MLAs to take a collective decision to defer the Census operation during the upcoming Assembly session as President's Rule has been revoked from Manipur.
Addressing a meeting at Mayang Imphal, JFD convenor Jitendra Ningomba stated that they are prepared to launch a massive movement from the last week of February if there is no positive response from the Government.
Census is an important exercise, but it needs to be conducted fairly so that illegal immigrants are not wrongfully included, he said.
Illegal immigrants must be identified, he reiterated and called on the people to unite and exert pressure on the Centre to address the issue.
He also warned that the wrongful inclusion of illegal immigrants in the Census would lead to inaccurate results and  overwhelm bona fide citizens in the future.
Jitendra claimed that the previous Census results were erroneous as an abnormal population growth was recorded in nine sub-divisions of the hill districts.
He also stated that mushrooming of several new villages in some hill districts is concerning.
There has been an influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar due to the situation in the neighbouring country, he said and urged the Government to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before conducting the Census exercise. He also contended that there have been instances in the past where the Census was deferred, and suggested that the Centre may consider deferring it again if the State Cabinet formally writes to the Centre.
