JNC stages protest

Shillong, Feb 5 : The Jaintia National Council (JNC) today staged a surprise protest march to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) office, condemning the council’s failure to address the issue of illegal trading by non-tribals and the non-implementation of the Pnar alphabets.
The JNC stated that it had written to the JHADC demanding checks against illegal trading by non-tribals, but no action was taken. The organisation also pointed out that although the JHADC had passed a resolution to recognise the Pnar alphabets and language, it had not been implemented.
The JNC is demanding the revocation of trading licences issued to non-tribals, implementation of the Pnar language for official purposes, and the convening of a special session to encourage the use of Pnar alphabets and language.
The organisation said the aim of the protest was not to create any law and order situation, but to urge the JHADC to safeguard the rights and interests of the local indigenous people.
