UKHRUL, Feb 5 : A total of 185 acres of poppy plantations were destroyed by combined security forces of Ukhrul at Leingangching Sikibung/Mapithel Hill Range, Kamjong and Khamasom Hill Range.
Marking the third phase of poppy destruction drive, over 122 security personnel of Ukhrul District Police, 8 Bihar Regiment, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), B Coy BSF 57 Bn, D Coy BSF 79 Bn and Forest Department, Ukhrul along with and Executive Magistrate, Kam-jong led by SDPO Jessami destroyed 90 acres of illegal poppy plantation at Leingangching Sikibung/Mapithel Hill Range under Phungyar Block.
Meanwhile, another team led by SDPO Ukhrul, comprising of Ukhrul District Police, 6 Manipur Rifles, Forest Department and 18 Assam Rifles carried out a poppy destruction drive at Khamasom Hill Range where 95 acres of poppy plantations were destroyed and two makeshift huts were set ablaze.
No poppy cultivators were found at the cultivation sites, and no arrests have been made.
The combined teams also seized some poppy pods. An FIR will be registered accordingly.
The poppy destruction drive will continue till Saturday, intensifying the "War on Drugs" campaign in Ukhrul.
