Roads, water and power supply Address these issues

A semblance of governance now. Coming as it has after May 3, 2023, and the Government at Imphal seems set to spread the ‘feel good’ sentiments to the people. And the timing is also on track, as Manipur is set to go to polls in the early part of 2027, that is next year. Enough time has been lost, too many have met senseless deaths and too many have been rendered homeless for close to three years-Points which seem to be nudging the Government to put its best foot forward. Whether this will translate into votes when voting day comes, is something which only time will tell, but it is more than obvious that Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand seems to be marching forward confidently. The no nonsense style that has been adopted to ensure that Mayai Lambi is restored to a state that fits the role of a road is something that would have gone down well with the people and so are the works taken up on the roads at the different leikais and at MG Avenue and Thangal Keithel. This is where one is tempted to remind the Government of the pot holes filled stretch that passes off as a road between Kakching district headquarters and Sugnu. Does not come anywhere near the understanding of a road but a death trap of a stretch and while it is dust all the way at the moment, come the rain then one can expect to see pond like water bodies in the middle of the road stretch. Fortunate it is that Manipur has not heard of serious mishaps along this stretch, but this could be due to many preferring to skip this particular stretch and opt for the alternative Mayai Lambi. For the moment, the focus of the Government will be on the ongoing Assembly session and work itself to be in a position to effectively respond to queries that the Opposition Congress is likely to raise. Something which the Government can do if it does not lose sight of things that are important to the people. The sky is yet to open up and if the dry spell persists, then one can expect water shortage everywhere. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho is new to the job, but as PHED Minister it is his duty to ensure that water pipes that have been laid across the leiraks and leikais of Imphal do not run dry or conk out. Apart from the impact the dry spell would have on agriculture, what steps can the PHED take up to ensure water supply to the people, or will it be a case of ‘putting the water tankers back in the business of supplying water to the people ?’ Road repair works ongoing, which is a huge relief to the people, and the obvious next task is obviously to ensure that people are not forced to go back to the days when they had to buy water from the water tankers. The new Government cannot overlook the fact that the expectations of the people are rather simple and all that is wanted are the basics and this include motorable roads, regular water supply, regular power supply, health facilities and maintenance of law and order. Simple expectations and one wonders why Governments down the years have always failed to note these expectations.
What is it that people want from the Government ? Prepare a sample and ask the people to list out what they want or expect from the Government ? It would not cover even one A4 sized paper. Motorable roads, regular water supply, regular power supply, good law and order, education, health. The people do not expect the moon. Getting down to the business of governance basically means addressing the points that have been spelt out here, but one wonders why successive Governments have always failed to read this. Address the points raised here and the prospect of the party in power, when election time comes, will be healthy, very healthy. Points which the people at the helm of affairs in the new Government should not forget. Sworn in on February 4 and while Manipur knows that the new Government is just a few days older than a month, Imphal should not forget that the same party is in power at Delhi. And this is where the expectations of the people can be intense. The task ahead is certainly not easy but the need to demonstrate that works have been taken up to address the needs of the people cannot be over emphasised. How the Government goes about doing that remains to be seen, but the points mentioned here will find takers with anyone in Manipur. Roti, Kapda Aur Makaan is not just a slogan.
