AR dismantles bunkers at Waphong

IMPHAL, Mar 11: A tense situation has gripped Waphong village in Kangpokpi district under Kangchup police station after Assam Rifles dismantled bunkers built by village volunteers this morning.  
Assam Rifles troops moved to the area in their armoured vehicles and dismantled the bunkers, notwithstanding strong objections raised by the villagers.
As the AR personnel dismantled the bunkers, a heated argument broke out between the villagers of Waphong and the AR personnel and it went on till late evening.  
Angered by the dismantling of bunkers by AR personnel, local womenfolk marched to the AR temporary camp set up in the nearby area and dismantled it.
Although the situation was brought under control after the arrival of State Police, the situation is still tense in the area, said sources.
In a separate incident,  gunfight was reported between suspected Kuki militants and village volunteers at Dolang Chiru today at around 4.30 pm under Noney district.
Sources said that heavily armed suspected Kuki militants moved toward Dolang Chiru from Zouzangtek and fired upon the villagers of Dolang Chiru.
Village volunteers of Dolang Chiru retaliated and fired toward the Kuki militants. The gunfight lasted for some minutes. It is suspected that there might be some casualties on the side of the Kuki militants, said the sources. The situation is still tense and security personnel have reportedly rushed to the area to prevent any kind of unwanted incidents, the sources added.
