IMPHAL, Mar 12 : The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) has extended a cash assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Sarangthem Hemchand, a driver who has been bedridden following a severe electric shock, followed by the onset of a life-threatening disease.
Hemchand, a resident of Ukhongshang Mayai Leikai, sustained a waist injury due to an electric shock. Shortly after this unfortunate incident, he was struck by a life-threatening illness, compounding his misery.
Today, a team of drivers, led by Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) president Hijam Ranjit and AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil handed over the cash assistance to Hemchand's wife, Bembem, to support his treatment.
Hemchand sustained an electric shock while cleaning his Tata truck after transporting sand and stones in 2024.
Despite his condition, he resumed driving after receiving treatment due to his family's poor situation.
However, another tragedy struck when he was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Unable to afford the treatment, he was forced to sell his land and house.
His family now live at his brother’s place.
Hemchand is currently undergoing treatment at JNIMS Hospital.
Speaking to the media, Anil stated that they decided to extend help to Hemchand after learning about his plight in a report published by The Sangai Express.
He prayed for the speedy recovery of Hemchand.
Stating that they have been extending help to drivers in dire circumstances, Anil appealed to everyone to inform them whenever a driver is in need of assistance.
Bembem, the wife of Hemchand, said that the unfortunate incident has put her family in serious hardship.
She explained that her husband was diagnosed with leukaemia shortly after he sustained the electric shock.
Bembem expressed her gratitude to the TDC, AMRTDMWU, and everyone who extended their support for her husband's treatment.
