IMPHAL, Mar 12: Till March 31, 2025, Manipur owes loans (outstanding debt) of Rs 20,846 crore.
This was stated by Chief Minister Y Khemchand who is also in-charge of the Finance Department on the floor of the State Assembly today.
Responding to a query raised by MLA Okram Surjakumar, Khemchand informed the House that the total indebted loans of Rs 20,846 crore includes internal debt component of Rs 12,869 crore, Government of India’s loan component of Rs 3324 crore and public account liabilities of Rs 4653 crore. The State’s revenue collection declined substantially on account of the violent crisis and it was one of the factors which compelled the State Government to take more loans, the Chief Minister said. The State Government took all these loans within the guidelines prescribed by the Central Government, he said.
Noting that the State has been facing a financial crisis, Surjakumar suggested the State Government to ask for more Central sponsored schemes and special packages from the Centre instead of taking more loans.
If the total amount loans owed by the State is Rs 20,846 crore and the State’s total population is assumed to be 32 lakh, each citizen is indebted an amount of Rs 65,143, Surjakumar pointed out.
