IMPHAL, Mar 14 : Babina Hospital has successfully performed its first ABO-incompatible kidney transplant.
The transplant was carried out on February 22, 2026, on a 21-year-old patient from Kamjong district, with his mother serving as the donor.
In this case, the donor and recipient had different blood groups, making it an ABO-incompatible kidney transplant, said a press release issued by the hospital’s PRO.
It said that such transplants require specialized medical preparation and treatment protocols to reduce the risk of immune rejection and to ensure the success of the procedure.
In comparison, a conventional living-donor kidney transplant is usually performed when the donor and recipient have compatible blood groups, which lowers the risk of rejection.
In ABO-incompatible transplantation, however, modern medical techniques and pre-transplant treatments are used to prepare the recipient’s immune system so that the transplant can be performed safely even when blood groups differ.
Kidney transplant services have been gradually expanding in Manipur through the efforts of both Government and private healthcare institutions. Babina Hospital’s transplant programme forms part of this broader effort to strengthen advanced medical care within the State, it said.
The hospital is also working to make kidney transplantation available locally at a comparatively affordable cost, helping reduce the need for patients to travel outside the State for treatment and easing the financial burden on families.
Commenting on the development, Dr Naorem Sharatkumar Singh, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at Babina Hospital, said the successful ABO-incompatible transplant reflects the careful preparation of the donor and recipient as well as the coordinated efforts of the hospital’s multidisciplinary transplant team.
Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh, CMD of Babina Group of Companies, congratulated the transplant team and stated that Babina Hospital remains committed to strengthening specialized healthcare services so that patients in the State can access advanced treatment locally and at a reasonable and affordable cost.
