IMPHAL, Mar 14 : Unknown miscreants shot dead a person at Keirak Muslim Makha Leikai, under Kakching police station, yesterday around 6.30 pm.
The deceased has been identified as Chingakham Malemnganba (51), a resident of Tejpur Awang Leikai in Kakching.
The deceased was a contractor and he was found dead in his car with bullet injuries.
So far, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the killing.
Meanwhile, a committee named the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Killing of Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei has been formed, demanding justice for the victim.
The JAC and the victim's family, during a sit-in protest held today at Tejpur Primary School ground, have resolved not to claim the body if the Government fails to arrest the killers by March 16.
Saying that Malemnganba was an innocent person, the protesters urged the Government to take immediate action and identify all individuals  involved in the crime on or before March 16.
The protesters further urged the Government to ensure proper protection and security for the victim's family members and to conduct a transparent, time-bound investigation so that justice is not delayed.
They also appealed to the public, civil society organizations, and the relevant authorities to extend their cooperation and support in ensuring justice for the victim.
Ch Thoithoibi, daughter of the deceased, stated that her father was killed by a group of people who waited for an opportune time, implying that the killing was premeditated.
In a message to the killers, she asked if they had no love in their hearts.
'Is no life secure in Manipur?' she questioned, and urged the Government to take immediate action to ensure that no such tragedy befalls other families.
It is reported that the JAC and the family members of the deceased, accompanied by the PRO of Hiyanglam AC MLA Y Radheshyam, have met Chief Minister Y Khemchand.
The Chief Minister has reportedly instructed all concerned authorities to take necessary actions to fulfill the demands of the JAC.
He also assured that all possible aid would be extended to the victim's family.
Police have registered a case at the Kakching police station and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the accused. However, the exact motive of the crime is yet to be ascertained.
The body was sent to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science (JNIMS) hospital morgue after a mobile forensic spot examination.
