‘81 arrested for poppy cultivation’

IMPHAL, Mar 17: Altogether 81 persons have been arrested and 44 FIRs have been registered in connection with poppy cultivation.
This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho in the State Assembly today in response to a query raised by Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar.
Losii Dikho said that the arrested persons included 16 village chiefs, one landowner and 64 poppy planters.
He said that soils removed from a forest area of Yumnam Patlou by M/S Keystone India Pvt Ltd were used in strengthening river embankments and construction of Imphal Ring Road.
He said that the soils were removed under Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980 to remove the blind corner and straighten the alignment of the nearby road.
Losii Dikho said that the Forest Department has been paid due royalty for removing the soils.
To another query raised by Th Lokeshwar, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand stated that the project of Restoration of Iroiyotpa Stream taken up under NABARD is being executed by four contractors namely; Vivek Nameirakpam, SV Construction, Sarangthem Shamu Singh and Konsam Inakhunba.
The total sanctioned amount of the project is Rs 8 crore while the work order amount is Rs 7.84 crore.
The total length of the stream covered by the project is 4.5 Kms and the project is currently executed in 2 Kms, Khemchand added.
