IMPHAL, Mar 2 : The Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) has today kicked off the 14th edition of Kanglei Mega Sports Festival-2026 at Mapal Kangjeibung with the theme- “Sports for Change”.
The sports festival was declared open by MLA Lourembam Rameshwor as the chief guest following the collection of sacred flame and a torch relay from Kangla fort.
Speaking at the occasion, Rameshwor expressed his concern over the declining State’s dominance in the field of sports in the recent years and called upon all the stakeholders to seriously look into the matter to restore State’s stature and dominance.
He also highlighted the need for reinforcing athletic prowess by grooming more athletes and working towards securing participation in every prestigious event.
Rameshwor further lauded the motive behind KSA’s sports festival that helps youth concentrate in games and sports rather than indulging in unproductive and avoidable festivities.
Speaking at the occasion, KSA president Seram Hemjit expressed his remorse over excessive and unnecessary activities during the Yaoshang festival that continue to linger despite relentless attempts to curb.
Even as every locality in the State celebrates Yaoshang with annual sports meet, youth continue to indulge in unwarranted activities. As such, the sports meet has been an annual event since 2012 to divert the youth towards sports and work towards eradicating these activities and substance abuse, he said.
KSA general secretary, Huirongbam Babloo noted the losing essence of games and sports conducted in localities and said that the sports festival is organised to invigorate the spirit of games and sports among youth.
He also maintained that the sports festival is being conducted in collaboration with different sports associations at different venues and urged all participating athletes to give their best. The inauguration programme was also attended by Naorem Praveen Singh, Secy YAS, Govt of Manipur and Thingujam Rame, president of All Yairipok Eastern Timbers Merchant Association as dignitaries.
