IMPHAL, Mar 30 : Exposing a serious lapse in civic responsibility, a large quantity of improperly disposed waste have been observed inside the secured enclosure of a transformer unit close to Gambhir Singh Shopping Arcade, BT Road, Imphal.
During an on-site inspection by this reporter, the enclosure was found littered with plastic waste, food leftovers and other discarded items, turning the sensitive electrical site into a dumping ground and raising significant risks of fire hazard and electrocution accidents in the crowded market area.
However, responsibility for the improper disposal remains unclear as eyewitnesses allege passers-by of frequently throwing wastes at the site while others point an accusing finger at the nearby street vendors.
Regardless, this issue has exposed the public's lack of civic sense and failure to use designated waste disposal sites.
Despite many confrontations by the local residents, the problem continues to persist, raising questions over public compliance.
The shopkeepers and daily commuters of the area have put forward a slew of sanitation concerns including foul smell, accumulation of waste and the lack of acknowledgement from the offenders.
Under such circumstances, the authorities concerned need to enforce the law and monitor such improper use of public property for waste disposal.
Meanwhile, the public needs to act responsibly and use designated waste dumping sites.
