IMPHAL, Mar 30: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has pushed for the installation of more Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) in the North East region.
Making a Special Mention at the ongoing Parliament session today, the RS MP highlighted the need to upgrade the existing weather monitoring system in the North East due to its complex mountainous terrain, heavy monsoon rainfall, frequent flash floods, landslides, thunderstorms, cloudbursts and increasing climate induced extreme weather events.
Giving reasons for additional DWRs in the region, Leishemba Sanajaoba said these radars can improve forecasting for precipitation patterns and early warnings for thunderstorms, floods, landslides and cyclones; strengthen disaster management as authorities can evacuate people, prepare emergency services and minimize damage to infrastructure and agriculture with better forecasting; provide agricultural benefits to farmers from accurate weather forecasts; reduce risks for floods and landslides through monitoring of rainfall patterns and enable timely interventions and climate change mitigation.
According to the RS MP, there are limited Doppler Radar installations in the North-East region.
In Assam, these radars are installed at Guwahati, Dhubri, Jorhat, Tezpur and Silchar. In Mizoram, at Aizawl, in Nagaland at Dimapur, in Manipur at Imphal, and in Arunachal Pradesh at Mandala Top and Namsai. Reasoning that adding more DWRs can significantly improve weather forecasting and disaster management in the region, the RS MP has urged the Central Government to set up more DWRs in the North East.
