IMPHAL, Mar 9: Steps are being taken up by the Government to send a pro-posal to recognise Manipuri as a Classical Language, said Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand in the State Assembly today.
During the discussion on Motion of Thanks to the Governor's speech in the House, Khemchand said the Government is taking up all necessary measures to push for inclusion of the Mani- puri in the list of Classical languages.
The new notification [inviting proposals] differs from the previous ones. The Government is carefully stu-dying the notification and taking up necessary measures to send a proposal, Khemchand said.
India has 11 Classical  languages.
The 11 Classical languages include Tamil, Sanskrit, Telegu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit. Five languages--Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit were latest to be classified as Classical languages in October 2024.
