IMPHAL, Mar 9: Social activist Laishram Brijkishore alias Boi has appealed for the constitution of an adhoc committee to oversee the construction of rigid pavements under the Manipur Urban Road, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project (MURDAMIP) during the seventh session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Speaking to media persons at his residence in Nagamapal today, Laishram Brijkishore highlighted the lack of concern for public safety in building the concrete roads. Recently, two road accidents took place at the same site in Uripok on March 3 and March 4. A 56-year old man from Uripok Sorbon Thingel was injured in the latter case. He is currently receiving treatment at Little Clinic.
In this connection, Laishram Brijkishore has demanded the concerned authority to bear/reimburse the medical costs of those injured due to negligence in such road construction work.
Citing the high volume of traffic along Uripok road, he termed the lack of urgency in completing the rigid pavement here as unfortunate.
The social activist also went on to question if any authority has been tasked with monitoring all 21 components under the project, which include erection of street lamps, repairing/renovating traffic signals, construction of public toilets, public ponds, bus stops etc.
Thus, he called for the formation of an adhoc/standing committee to monitor the construction of rigid pavements and conduct regular quality checks.
Otherwise, a Public Interest Litigation may also be filed, he cautioned. On another note, he lauded the allocation of Rs 350 crore in the Budget to assist conflict affected women in the State.
