IMPHAL, Apr 5: Chief Minister Yumnam Khem-chand has asserted that his Government is committed to developing Jiribam as a model district.
The Chief Minister today made a direct assessment of a site identified for development of an Inter-State Truck Terminus (ISTT) at Jiribam.
Speaking to media persons there, Khemchand expressed his Government’s will to develop Jiribam as a model district.
Khemchand said “every community wants peace and we need to remove the trust deficit. My objective is to restore peace”.
Reiterating that Jiribam is the first district, where people representing all communities gathered and had lunch together, after the unprecedented crisis that erupted on May 3, 2023, he remarked that the gathering was a memorable one.
He said that he would look into the possibilities of taking up other tourism projects at the site of the Inter State Truck Terminus in consultation with the Town Planning Department, as the area of the site is large enough.
Regarding his visit to the district, Khemchand stated that his ongoing visit was the second, after becoming the Chief Minister of the State.
He maintained that his Government’s objective is to strengthen the bonding among different communities and restore peace in the State.
The Chief Minister also led a tree plantation drive at the site which was organised by Jiribam Forest Division. MLAs and senior officials of the State Government also planted tree saplings.
Khemchand also met Thomas Hmar, president of the Hmar Supreme House, Barak Valley, Assam today.
According to a social media post shared by the Chief Minister, the interaction was meaningful and forward-looking, with a shared commitment towards fostering peace, understanding and stability in Manipur.
The same post said that Thomas Hmar played a pivotal role in translating dialogue into tangible outcomes, particularly in facilitating the agreement between the Hmar People’s Convention (D) and the Government of Assam.
Khemchand said that his (Thomas Hmar) experience and leadership in peace-building efforts are commendable.
“I am confident that his continued guidance and pro-active engagement can significantly contribute towards strengthening har- mony and ushering in lasting peace among all communities of Manipur. Together we remain committed to dialogue, coope- ration and inclusive pro-gress for a peaceful and prosperous State”, Khem-chand wrote.
