IMPHAL, Apr 8: In view of recent incidents of extreme violence affecting children in the State, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has called for strengthened security arrangements in relief camps and other vulnerable areas to safeguard children and civilians.
MCPCR's statement follows the disturbing cases of the alleged brutal rape and murder of an 8 year old internally displaced girl from Moreh whose body was recovered on April 6, along with the tragic killing of two young siblings, a 5-month-old infant girl and her 5-year-old brother, while critically injuring their mother, in a terror attack at approximately 1 am on April 7 at Tronglaobi, Bishnupur.
In related incidents of unrest, two civilians lost their lives, and several others sustained bullet injuries near a security force's post in the Tronglaobi Maning area.
As these incidents reflect a deeply disturbing escalation of violence, wherein women and children are increasingly becoming direct victims of the conflict, MCPCR has called for prompt, impartial, and time-bound investigation into all incidents and bringing the perpetrators to justice without delay.
MCPCR has appealed to the State Government to activate and reinforce child protection mechanisms, including immediate psychosocial care, trauma counselling, and rehabilitation support for affected children and families.
It has further urged the Government to ensure accountability of all agencies responsible for the protection of civilians, particularly in conflict-affected and high-risk zones.
The State bears both a constitutional and moral responsibility to ensure that every child lives in safety, dignity, and with full protection of their fundamental right to life.
The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights reiterated that the protection of children is non-negotiable.
