IMPHAL, Apr 8: The Meitei Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University conducted a candlelight vigil at the university campus in memory of the two innocent children who were killed in a "terror attack" at Tronglaobi on April 7.
The vigil was carried out under the theme "We gather to remember, to resist, to hope". The students held placards inscribed with the words "No cause justifies the killing of innocent children", "Enough Deaths, Enough Excuses, Act Now", "Transparent investigation and justice for all", "Maintaining peace at the cost of innocent lives is not peace, it is silent massacre" etc.
Condemning the tragic incident which sent shockwaves through Manipur, Meitei Students JNU has extended its condolences to the bereaved families of the victims, adding that it stands in solidarity with all those affected by brutal terror attacks.
It also mentioned the role of the CRPF jawans during civilian protests which led to three more deaths and several injuries.
Stating that the bomb attack occurred after the Chief Minister's April 5 visit to Jiribam which initiated a fragile calm in the State, Meitei Students JNU said the Tronglaobi incident has compelled people to question the governance and the prevailing human security situation in Manipur.
The student body has urged the Government of Manipur and the Government of India to act with urgency, responsibility, and transparency to restore law and order, ensure accountability for these inhumane acts, and rebuild the trust of the people.
It has also appealed for a civilized and humane resolution to this conflict-ridden situation, wherein the grievances of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are handled sensitively and their safe resettlement ensured.
It has maintained that to achieve justice and lasting normalcy, concrete measures and public policies must reflect the larger interests of all communities without bias.
A candlelight vigil was held at Wahengbam Leikai, Imphal West, today, expressing solidarity with the bereaved family of the two children who were tragically killed in a barbaric attack allegedly carried out by Kuki militants at Tronglaobi in the early hours yesterday.
The gathering also paid homage to civilians who lost their lives after being shot by personnel of the CRPF while they were reportedly agitating in connection with the killing of the two children. The peaceful vigil was jointly organised by the YSCU and the Wahengbam Leikai Apunba Nupi Lup. A large number of local residents, including women and youth, participated in the programme, lighting candles and observing silence as a mark of respect for the deceased.
The gathering strongly condemned the violence and expressed anguish over the loss of innocent lives. They called for justice, accountability, and measures to ensure that such tragic incidents do not recur in the future. The organisers reiterated their commitment to peace and urged authorities to take necessary steps to safeguard civilian lives and restore normalcy in the region.
