
IMPHAL, May 12: A prominent exponent of Manipuri Classical dance, Padma Shri Kshetrimayum ongbi Thouranisabi Devi passed away at 92 at her residence at Singjamei Mathak Thokchom Leikai this afternoon.
Thouranisabi was born on November 6, 1934 at Singjamei Sapam Leikai.
Her father, Leishangthem Thampha Singh, was a polo player and her mother, lbetombimacha was a renowned Nata Sankritana artiste.
She was married to late Ksh Nawang of Singjamei Mathak Thokchom Leikai.
She is survived by her children, Ksh Ragini, Ksh Achoubi, Ksh Rajen and Ksh Ranibala.
Thouranisabi grew up as a fan of Manipuri Classical dance.
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2003. She also served as the Principal of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy.
She penned and published two volumes of the book Diva Ras in 1993, and wrote "Ras Makhal Amashung Nungi Mashak"--a book based on Manipuri Jagoi (dance).
She recorded 6 albums for "His Master's Voice," a famous record label.
