IMPHAL, May 14 : Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has strongly protested the proposal to hand over the charge of VC to a ‘junior’ Professor of the Department of Commerce.
As Visitor of Manipur University, President Droupadi Murmu had approved the proposal to hand over the charge of Vice Chancellor of MU to Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain from the Department of Commerce with immediate effect.
As per a communication sent by Rajesh Kumar, Under Secretary to the Government of India, Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain will be the VC in-charge until the new VC assumes office.
In view of this development, volunteers of the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) have locked the Vice Chancellor's Office accusing the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education of erroneously assigning the office of VC in-charge to the Commerce Professor.
Speaking in this connection, Mayanglambam Malemnganba, general secretary, MUSU, said as per the Manipur University Act 2025, the office of VC in-charge should be assumed by the senior-most Professor in the university.
Assigning this post to someone who clearly does not fulfil this criteria is unacceptable and MUSU takes this situation very seriously, he said.
Expressing suspicion about the involvement of politics in the selection of the VC in-charge, he called the entire situation deeply unfortunate.
As such, the newly selected VC in-charge will not be allowed to enter the VC Office, declared the MUSU general secretary.
