IMPHAL, Jun 13 : A public convention of indigenous people at Kakching district's Pangantabi called on the Government to scrap the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Manipur before census operations.
The convention, held under the aegis of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, was held at the Ima Panthoibi Laibung, Pangantabi.
Members of different communities attended the convention.
The convention also demanded the Government to remove Assam Rifles from Manipur, restore normalcy and take steps to improve the economy of the native people.
Speaking at the convention, Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation's convenor, Jeetendra Ningomba, accused the Government of favouring SoO Kuki militant groups.
He asserted that the cause of the present crises is the uncontrolled influx of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries, particularly Myanmar over the decades.
While the indigenous people of Manipur are facing illegal immigrants' aggression, the Government is deliberately ignoring the public's demand to update the NRC to identify and deport illegal immigrants.
The aggression against indigenous people has displaced thousands and killed many, but no actions have been taken against the perpetrators till today, he added.
"Instead of taking any concrete measures to bring about a resolution to the crises, the Government is deploying CoBRA battalions in the hope of bringing normalcy," Jeetendra said.
To restore normalcy and make way for peace, the Government must crack down on the Kuki militants and update the NRC to identify and deport illegal immigrants, he added.
Members of Western Valley Area (Anal), Western Chandel Foothill Tribal Organisation, SDSC, SEMDO, SWYC, YOP, Meira Paibi Pangantabi, All Meira Paibi Kakching District and Native People's Committee Manipur (NPCM) attended the convention.
