IMPHAL, Jul 15 : With the Government not paying any attention to its repeated appeals to keep census operations at bay until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated with respect to Manipur, the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) is poised to launch mass agitation which will cause headache to the Government.
Speaking at a public meeting held today at Keinou, Bishnupur district, JFD campaign committee convenor Jitendra Ningomba said that the mode of mass agitation will be announced soon.
He spoke in detail on the need to put off census operations and the urgent necessity for updating the NRC.
Jitendra said that the JFD does not oppose the census operations per se and it is fully aware of the benefits of collecting census data.
However, it is a fact that the violence and unrest besieging Manipur for over three years are caused by illegal immigrants. That is why, the JFD has been demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, he said.
Several memoranda and representations have been submitted to the President of India, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to conduct the census exercise in Manipur after first updating the NRC.
But neither the Government of India nor the State Government has been paying any attention to all these memoranda and representations. Rather, the Governments have made all preparations to kick off census operations from August 17, 2026, he said.
At present, both the Meitei and Naga communities are suffering extreme misery on account of the sustained violent aggression launched by illegal immigrants.
If census operations are carried out under the present situation, illegal immigrants who have been continuously attacking indigenous people will become Indian citizens.
Once they become citizens of the country, there will be no legal premise to call them illegal immigrants or outsiders, Jitendra said.
JFD finance secretary Sunil Karam alleged that there are three Chief Ministers in Manipur, one each for Meitei, Naga and Kuki communities.
If the census operations are carried out without first identifying illegal immigrants, survival of the Meitei community will be in great peril, he said.
Sunil Karam said that BJP has already formed a committee on the scheduled census operations.
To the political leaders of the State, their seats of power are far more important than the critical issue of illegal immigrants. Given such an attitude of the Government leaders, the State will see more unrest, he added.
