Imphal, Jul 20 : The Fast Track Special Court no 2, Lamphelpat today convicted one Khwairakpam Tomba Meitei (28) in connection with a 2020 child sexual assault case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to the prosecution, the case arose from an FIR lodged on October 18, 2020, alleging that the accused sexually assaulted a minor girl the previous day (October 17, 2020) and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident.
Following the complaint, the police conducted an investigation, recorded witness statements, carried out medical examinations, and filed a chargesheet.
During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses, including the victim, her mother, doctors, seizure witnesses, and the investigating officer.
The Court relied on the victim's testimony, corroborative medical evidence, and other prosecution evidence while assessing the case.
The defence denied the allegations, contending that the prosecution had failed to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
After evaluating the evidence, the Court held that the prosecution had proved the charge of penetrative sexual assault against the accused.
Hence, Tomba was convicted under Section 3(a) of the POCSO Act,2012 punishable under Section 4 of the same Act and Section 503 IPC punishable under Section 506 IPC.
The sentence hearing will take place on July 27, 2026.
Following his conviction, Tomba was taken into judicial custody and remanded to the Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
The Court directed the jail authorities to produce him before the Court on the next date of hearing, either physically or through video conferencing, for the sentence hearing.
