Media consultation prog on Mapithel Dam held

IMPHAL, Apr 17: A media consultation programme on the topic ‘Mapithel Dam and its commissioning’ was orga-nised at Manipur Press Club today by Mapithel Dam Affected Villagers Organi-sation (MDAVO), JAC Mapithel Dam Downstream Affected Peoples (MDDAP) and Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRAM).
JAC MDDAP president Yumlembam Thoiba, Lai-shram Mandir of Heirok Loumi Kanba Lup, MDAVO chairman Dominic Kashung and AMUCO president Ph Deban took part in the event as the presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Y Thoiba urged the authority concerned to establish an expert committee to check the condition of the unfinished dam and also appea- led to the State Government to provide a source of livelihood for the people who would be affected if the dam burst without any warning.
AMUCO president Ph Deban also pointed out that construction of any dam would not be a problem if the authority make adequate arrangements to ease the plight of people who would be affected by the project. He said that the people are angry and restless because the authority is not providing necessary compensation.
He also demanded a white paper on the construction of the dam.
Many leaders and representatives of the villages affected by construction of the dam also warned against commissioning the dam without permission from the people affected by it and before the demands of the various organisations are met.
